In an effort to make some suggestions about issues regarding East Asian cities that have been “An 11th Month Invitation: A Time to Reflect,” NEWS FROM NOWHERE’s second seminar, was held on December 6 at Ewha Womans University Museum. Koreans tradi- tionally considered the winter solstice, which has the shortest amount of daylight and the longest night of the year, as a smaller version of New Year’s Day, the time when one year comes to an end and people prepare for a new year. By greeting a new morning after the long winter solstice night, we planned to examine past and current art and culture and what is going on in society today, while also talking about the function and role of art in the future. At the seminar, Yusaku Imamura (Director, Tokyo Wonder Site), Kayoko Iemura (Program Director, Tokyo Wonder Site), and Professor Sunjung Kim of Korea National University of Arts were presenters. Also, Marc Gloede (Curator, abc- art Berlin Contemporary & Art Basel Film) and Professor Harris H. Kim (Department of Sociology, Ewha Womans University), artists Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho took part as panelists. The following is a short summary of the seminar.
Throughout world history, various issues surrounding the human condition are continuously raised. The same is true with the role of art and artists. The space we live in has three core elements: ground, axis, and window. The role of art is to create the ground, or the foundation, and some- where where “good” things can grow. A strong axis and a window are needed to see into the future. Although art and artists are not responsible for bringing about a new society, art should be able to predict and reflect how society changes. Art enters into a relationship with different aspects of society and constantly imposes new roles on itself. Art begins with small things, creates realizable goals, and puts a priority on the process of “doing” rather than on tangible results. In that same vein, the NEWS FROM NOWHERE project looks at what is happening in society today through the lens of a future point of view. Due to the fact that we live in a community, it is important to think of a community’s meaning. We need to seriously consider why we are here and what our roles in society are. At the same time, we should believe in the strength and potential of humanity. Art should not be about asking questions and then opening a book to find the answer; we should aspire to fill the empty pages of a new book.
동짓달의 초대: 시대의 밤, 그리고 새로운 아침
동짓달을 맞아 NEWS FROM NOWHERE에서 마련한 두 번째 세미나 ‘동짓달의 초대: 시대의 밤, 그리고 새로운 아침’이 12월 6일 이화여자대학교 박물관에서 열렸다. 동지(冬至)는 1년 중 낮이 가장 짧고 밤이 가장 긴 날이다. 예로부터 작은 설이라고도 하여 한 해를 마무리하고 새해를 준비하는 소중한 기간이기도 하다. 동짓날 긴 밤을 지내고 새로운 아침을 맞이하는 자세로 현재의 예술과 문화, 그리고 사회에 대한 구태의연한 질서와 담론을 반성하고 새로운 시대 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할을 논의하자는 취지로 열린 이번 세미나에는 도쿄 원더 사이트의 디렉터 유사쿠 이마무라와 프로그램 디렉터 카요코 이에무라, 한국종합예술대학교 김선정 교수가 발제자로, abc-art Berlin Contemporary, Art Basel Film 큐레이터 마크 글뢰더와 김현수 이화여자대학교 사회학과 교수 그리고 문경원, 전준호 작가가 토론자로 참여했다. 다음은 세미나 내용을 간략 요약한 내용이다.
일본 대지진 참사를 비롯한 여러 세계사적 격량 속에서 인간 삶의 조건에 대한 다양한 문제가 제기되고 있다. 예술과 예술가들의 역할에 대해서도 마찬가지다. 우리가 사는 공간은 세 가지 핵심 요소를 지닌다. 그라운드와 축, 그리고 창. 예술의 역할은 그 중에서도 땅, 즉 꽃이 자라날 토대를 만드는 것이다. 그 위에 단단한 축을 세우고 앞을 내다볼 수 있는 창을 만들어야 한다. 예술과 예술가에게 새로운 사회를 만들 책임이 있는 것은 아니지만 예술은 사회가 어떻게 흘러가는지 전망하고 전달할 수 있어야 한다. 예술은 서로 다른 영역과 관계 맺으며 새로운 역할을 끊임없이 스스로에게 부여한다. 작은 것으로부터 시작하여 실현 가능한 의제를 만들고 결과를 중요시하기보다는 과정을 중요시한다. NEWS FROM NOWHERE 프로젝트에서 미래의 시점을 빌어 지금 현재를 이야기하는 것 또한 같은 맥락 안에 존재한다. 우리는 공동체 안에서 살아가고, 공동의 의미를 생각하는 것은 그래서 중요하다. 내가 왜 여기 있는지, 사회 안에서 나의 역할은 무엇인지 고민하고 인간성의 힘과 역량을 믿어야 한다. 과정을 통해 질문을 던지고 답이 적힌 책을 펼치는 것이 아닌, 새로운 빈 장을 채워나가는 것이 우리가 지향하는 예술의 역할이다.
