Film Shooting El Fin del Mundo

Shooting on NEWS FROM NOWHERE’s El Fin del Mundo wrapped up on February 23 and is scheduled to be released in June. The film, which is currently in post- production, stars Lee Jung-jae and Yim Soo-jung. The producer is Oh Jung-wan and the director of photography is Ko Rak-sun. Dalparan and Jang Young-gyu handled the music, while the film was edited by Nam Na-young and costume design was done by Jung Kuho. Filming was done entirely at an indoor setting designed by the director and art director. The running time of the film is set to be around 20 minutes, and will be shown using two separate screens with installation art pieces.
The film is set in the late 21st century, when the Earth is extremely polluted with a number of hazardous substances and is highly radioactive. Much of the planet has also been submerged under water because of rising sea levels. Anyone still living depends on a multinational corporation called TEMPUS, a floating city state and really all that is left of the world, for their survival. The film consists of dialogues between a man and a woman who are conducting a mission with the aim of being admitted to TEMPUS. The characters, who are shown on two different standing screens, figuratively represent mankind’s lost values, a very human sense of loss, and the awful state society has reached as the scenes move back and forth between the past and present.

Yim Soo-jung
Yim made her debut in 2003 with Kim Ji- woon’s thriller A Tale of Two Sisters. That same year, she won a Breakthrough Actress of the Year award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, establishing herself as a notable actress. In 2006, she appeared in Park Chan-wook’s I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK, which was officially invited to the competition category of the 57th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2011, she was invited to the 61st Berlin Film Festival with Come Rain Come Shine. With both a youthful appearance and an elegance all her own, Yim is now one of the most sought-after Korean actresses. A great actress, she is also very popular with audiences. This will be the first time she has done a movie of this genre.
Lee Jung-jae
Lee made his acting debut on a TV commercial in 1993 and instantly became an icon for young Koreans. Since then, he has built a career around both TV and film. In 1998, he firmly established his status as an actor when he appeared in Lee Jae-yong’s An Affair, and then won a Best Actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in 1999 for his role in City of the Rising Sun. Since then, he has starred in movies that include Il Mare, Oh! Brothers, and Typhoon. In 2010, Lee starred in the remake film of a high-profile erotic thriller The Housemaid (originally directed by Ki-young KIM), which won him a Best Actor award at Fantasporto.
MOON Kyungwon, Director
MOON received her Ph.D. in Visual Communication at Yonsei University and an M.F.A. in Art/Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts. She has held solo exhibitions at Seoul’s Gallery HYUNDAI in 2010 and Japan’s Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in 2004. She has also been a part of several group shows, including ones at the Tokyo Wonder Site in 2010, one in Bochum, Germany in 2010, one in Istanbul, Turkey in 2009, and one at Korea’s Nam June Paik Art Center in 2008. MOON also collaborated with Tadao Ando on a public art project at Genius Loci on Jeju Island in 2007, and helped create the Media Canvas at Seoul Square in 2010.
JEON Joonho, Director
JEON received his M.F.A. from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, and a B.F.A. from Dong-Eui University. He has held solo exhibitions at Tokyo’s SCAI The Bathhouse in 2009, Paris’s Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in 2008, Korea’s Arario Gallery in 2008, and at New York’s Perry Rubenstein Gallery in 2007. JEON has also taken part in several group exhibitions at the LACMA in 2009, Houston’s Museum of Fine Art in 2008, Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum in 2007, and at the L’Espace culturel Louis Vuitton. In addition, JEON has won awards at the 2004 Gwangju Biennial and at the 2007 Ljubijana Biennial.
OH Jungwan, Producer
Oh Jeong-wan was one of a new generation of producers in the 1990s, and became a leading female producer in the Korean film industry after working on films that appealed to young people with creative ideas. She has produced Kumiho, Wedding Story, The Gingko Bed, An Affair, The Foul King, The Scandal, A Tale of Two Sisters, Three, Monster, The Woman on the Beach, and Come Rain Come Shine. She is currently working to export Korean films over- seas and explore foreign markets in associa- tion with prominent directors and producers in Asia.
Ko Rak-sun, Director of Photography
Ko got his start in film in the mid-1990s working as part of the lighting crew. He moved on to work as the lighting director for Two Cops II (1996) and A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003). He later became a director of photography on Beastie Boys (2008) and Nameless Gangster: Rules of Time (2012). Go has an intimate understanding of light and how best to capture it on film thanks in part to his time as a lighting crew member.
Dalparan, Director of Music
Dalparan (real name Kang Gi-young) started his musical career as a bass guitarist for the band Sinawe, a pioneer in Korean heavy metal music. He showed his diversity while working with the rock bands H2O, the punk rock group Pipi Band, and the modern rock band Dalparan & Byung-Jun. He was also a trailblazer in the Korean electronic music field when he worked as a techno music DJ and released several albums in this genre. Since working as a direc- tor of music for Jang Sun-woo’s Bad Movie in 1997, he has been working in the same field. He has worked on music for films such as Resurrection of the Little Match Girl, A Bittersweet Life, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, and The Front Line.
Jang Young-gyu, Director of Music
Jang Young-gyu started his musical career as a member of the avant-garde music group Eoeo- bu Project Band in the 1990s. He is a leading director of film music in Korea and has worked on films such as The Yellow Sea, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, The High Rollers, A Bit- tersweet Life, The Uninvited, Faceless Beauty, The Foul King, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and, most recently, The Front Line. He works in a number of genres, like the Korean music project he worked on to reinterpret traditional Buddhist music and court music. He has also directed music for dance performances and plays. Not long ago, he worked on the music in two films with artists and film directors and put on a performance called “The Light That Is Heard”, a mixture of movies and music, at Seoul’s LIG Art Hall.
Jung Kuho, Art director
Jung Kuho is one of the top fashion designers in Korea, and is famous not only for his cloth- ing, but also for interior design, furniture, lighting and much more. He has his own brand, KUHO, and after exporting it to New York he was named “One of the Nine Designers to Watch” in 2011 by New York magazine. Many believe his avant-garde aspects and minimalist designs come together beautifully. He designed costumes for many films including An Affair and Tell Me Something. He was also the recipient of the Best Costume Design Award at the Daejong Film Awards in 2004 with The Scandal and with Hwang Jin Yi 2008.
MOON Saekyung, Film Editor
Kim Sung-eun, Assistant Director
Kim worked as a 1st AD on El Fin Del Mundo (2012). She made her debut in the film industry through the lighting department on director Im Sang-soo’s Tears (2000). Later, she worked as a 2nd AD on Moon Seung-wook’s The Butterfly (2001) and Im Sang-soo’s A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003), going on to become 1st AD on Moon Seung-wook’s Romance. She worked as a 1st AD for Yim Pil-sung’s Hansel and Gretel (2007) and Lee Hae-jun’s Castaway on the Moon (2008). She is currently developing a screenplay for an upcoming film.
Cho Soo-jin, Line Producer
Cho Soo-jin worked as the line producer for El Fin Del Mundo (2012). She made her debut in the film industry as a crew member for Moon Seung-wook’s The Butterfly (2001), and first worked as a line producer for the music documentary On the Road, Two (2005). She added to her experience as a professional line producer when she worked on The Birth of a Family (2006), While You Were Sleeping (2008), and Finding Mr. Destiny (2010). She is currently working on projects both in Korea and abroad.

메인 필름 촬영

오는 6월 첫 선을 보이는 NEWS FROM NOWHERE 프로젝트의 메인 필름 촬영을 지난 2월 23일 종료했다. 현재 후반 작업 중인 남녀 주인공은 이정재와 임수정이 각각 출연하였고, 프로듀서 오정완, 촬영 감독 고락선, 음악은 달파란, 장영규, 편집 남나영, 의상은 정구호가 맡았다. 미술 감독과 연출 감독이 제작한 실내 세트에서 모든 촬영이 이뤄졌고, 상영시간은 20분 정도로 두 개의 스크린을 이용해서 설치 작품들과 함께 보여질 것이다.
영화는 21세기 후반, 해수면 상승으로 대지가 물에 잠기고 방사능을 비롯한 각종 유해 물질에 오염된 지구를 배경으로 하고 있다. 살아남은 인류는 바다 위를 부유하는 도시 국가이자 세계 그 자체인 다국적 기업에 생존을 의존한다. 영화는 이곳에 가기 위해 부여된 임무를 수행하는 두 남녀 배우의 대화로 진행된다. 두 개의 스탠드식 스크린에 각각 비춰진 두 배우의 모습은 현재와 과거를 오가며 잃어버린 가치와 인간적 상실감, 부조리한 사회를 그들의 과거 기억에 빗대어 나타낸다.

임수정
1998년 데뷔한 임수정은 2003년 김지운 감독의 공포영화 에 출연하여 그해 청룡영화제 등을 비롯한 여러 영화제 신인상을 수상하며 주목받는 여배우로 자리 매김했다. 2006년 박찬욱 감독의 에 출연했고 이 영화로 제57회 베를린 국제영화제 경쟁부문에 공식 초청되었다. 2011년에는 영화 로 제61회 베를린 국제영화제에 공식 초청되었다. 순수한 소녀의 얼굴과 단아하고 우아한 여인의 모습을 갖춘 임수정은 감독들이 함께 하고 싶어 하는 여배우로 손꼽히며 대중성과 연기력을 갖춘 배우로 인정받고 있다. 이번 영화를 통해 새로운 장르의 연기에 도전한다.
이정재
1993년 광고를 통해 당시 대한민국 청춘 아이콘으로 화려하게 등장한 이정재는 이후 드라마와 영화를 넘나들며 다양한 이력을 쌓았으며 1998년 이재용 감독이 연출한 영화 를 통해 배우로서 입지를 공고히 다졌다. 영화 에 출연, 1999년 청룡영화상 남우주연상을 수상했으며 , , 등의 영화를 찍었다. 2010년에는 김기영 감독의 를 리메이크한 영화에 출연하여 제 31회 판타스포르토 국제영화제 감독 주간 섹션 남우주연상을 수상했다.
문경원, 연출
서울에서 태어나 이화여자대학교와 미국 칼아츠에서 미술을 공부하고 연세대학교 영상대학원에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 2010년 갤러리 현대, 2007년 성곡미술관, 2004년 일본 후쿠오카 시립미술관 등에서 개인전을 가졌고, 2010년 도쿄원더사이트 , 독일 보쿰미술관, 터키 이스탄불미술관 , 2008년 난징 트리엔날레, 백남준 미술관 등의 단체전에 참여했다. 건축가 안도 타다오와 제주도 Genius Loci 프로젝트를 진행했으며, 서울 스퀘어의 미디어 캔버스 프로젝트 등 여러 공공미술 프로젝트에 참여했다.
전준호, 연출
부산에서 태어나 동의대학교 미술학과와 영국 첼시 미술대학원에서 미술 공부를 했다. 2009년 동경의 스카이 더 바스하우스, 2008년 파리의 테디우스 로팩 갤러리와 한국의 아라리오 갤러리 그리고 2007년 뉴욕 페리 루벤스타인 갤러리 등에서 개인전을 가졌고, 2011년 요코하마 트리엔날레, 2009년LACMA와 휴스턴 미술관에서 , 파리 에스파세 루이비통에서 , 2007년 동경 모리미술관에서 등의 단체전에 참여했다. 2004년 광주 비엔날레 비엔날레 상과 2007년 루불라냐 그래픽 비엔날레에서 대상을 수상했다.
오정완, 프로듀서
1990년대 중반 한국 영화계의 신세대 프로듀서 중 한 명으로 등장한 오정완은 신선한 아이디어로 젊은 감각의 영상을 만들며 한국 영화계의 새로운 방향을 제시해온 대표적인 여성 프로듀서이다. 그녀가 제작한 영화로는 , , , , , , , , , 등이 있다. 국내 시장뿐만 아니라 아시아의 내로라하는 감독, 제작자와 손잡고 한국 영화의 해외 시장 개척과 제작의 국제화에 힘쓰고 있다.
고락선, 촬영 감독
고락선은 1990년대 중반 조명 스태프로 영화일을 시작하여 1996년 를 거쳐 2003년 조명 감독을 맡았다. 조명 감독을 하다 촬영으로 영역을 넓힌 특이한 이력을 지닌 그는 2008년 를 시작으로 2012년 를 통해 촬영을 본격적으로 시작하게 되었다. 조명 경력 덕분에 빛에 대한 이해가 뛰어나며, 화면 안에 빛을 담아내는 탁월한 감각을 지니고 있다는 평을 듣고 있다.
달파란, 음악 감독
달파란(강기영)은 한국 헤비메탈 음악의 선구자였던 그룹 시나위의 베이시스트로 음악을 시작했다. 얼터너티브 록밴드 H2O, 펑크록 그룹 삐삐밴드, 모던록 밴드 달파란과 병준 등을 통해 다양한 음악 세계를 보여주었다. 또한 테크노 DJ 활동과 앨범을 발표하며 한국 일렉트로니카 음악의 선구자가 되었다. 1997년 장선우 감독의 음악 감독을 시작으로 , , , 등의 음악을 맡아 영화 음악가로서도 활발히 활동하고 있다.
장영규, 음악 감독
장영규는 1990년대 초반 전위음악 그룹 ‘어어부 프로젝트’의 멤버로 음악을 시작했다. 영화 , , , , , , , , 최근의 까지 한국을 대표하는 영화음악 감독이다. 그 밖에 불교음악이나 궁중음악을 재해석하는 한국음악 프로젝트 ‘비빙’과 무용과 연극 음악감독 등 다양한 장르에서 활동하고 있다. 최근에는 아티스트 및 영화감독과 함께 두 편의 영화와 음악을 공동 작업해 영화+음악 프로젝트 ‘들리는 빛’이라는 공연을 LIG 아트홀에 올리기도 했다.
정구호, 미술 감독
정구호는 한국 최고의 디자이너 가운데 한 명으로 옷뿐만 아니라 인테리어 디자인, 가구, 조명 등으로도 잘 알려져 있다. 현재 ‘KUHO’라는 이름의 브랜드를 운영하고 있다. 자신의 브랜드로 뉴욕 컬렉션에 진출한 정구호는 뉴욕 매거진(www.nymag.com)으로부터 ‘2011년 주목해야 할 9명의 디자이너’로 꼽혔다. 아방가르드 룩을 지향하는 그의 의상은 전위적이면서도 미니멀한 디자인 작업이 잘 어우러졌다는 평가를 받는다. , 등의 영화 의상을 담당했고, 2004년과 2008년 대종상영화제에서 , 로 의상상을 수상하기도 했다.

김성은, 조감독
영화 조감독으로 참여한 김성은은 2000년 임상수 감독의 촬영조명 스크립터로 영화에 입문하였다. 이후 2001년 문승욱 감독의 , 2003년 임상수 감독의 연출 스크립터를 거쳐 2005년 문승욱 감독의 에서 조감독을 맡았다. 2007년 임필성 감독의 , 2008 이해준 감독의 조감독으로 참여하였고 현재 새로운 영화 작업을 위한 시나리오를 개발 중이다.
조수진, 라인 피디
영화 라인 피디로 참여한 조수진은 2001년 문승욱 감독의 연출부로 영화를 시작하였고, 2005년 뮤직다큐영화 에서 처음 라인 피디를 맡게 된다. 2006년 , 2008년 , 2011년 를 거치며 전문 라인 프로듀서로 경력을 쌓는다. 현재 한국과 외국을 오가며 프로덕션 서비스와 영화 일을 병행하고 있다.
