Held every 5 years since 1955, Kassel Documenta is holding its 13th exhibition this year.
Opened for 100 days from June 9th to September 16th, 2012 at Kassel in Germany, MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho presented their collaborative project News From Nowhere for the very first time.
Introducing the Interview from Kassel, September 6th. Interviewing MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho about their project, News from Nowhere.
NFN - How do you feel about being artists from Korea to participate in Kassel Documenta ?one of the biggest art events in the world ? for the first time in a long time?
MOON & JEON - When we received the invitation to partake in dOCUMENTA(13), we thought that we would be able to present News From Nowhere, which was at its planning stage at the time, in the most appropriate space. We were extremely pleased.
NFN - How did you come about, participating in Kassel documenta?
MOON & JEON - Caroline, the artistic director of dOCUMENTA(13) this year, visited Korea in 2010. We knew each other from previous exhibition, and when she asked about our latest work, we explained to her about the project News From Nowhere. Caroline showed interest in the project at the time, and some time later, we received her suggestion to show the work at dOCUMENTA(13).
NFN - What work are you presenting at Kassel documenta, an important event which proposes the directivity in contemporary art today? Can you explain in detail the content and production process of the work?
MOON & JEON - The work consists of two channel video installation, installation with collaborators, website, and a book.
News From Nowhere began by focusing on the social role and function of art. While we were wondering what the social role and function of art is, and if our voice is flowing backwards in this age, we also came to question how other visual artists think about these issues we were questioning. We came to plan a collaborative project that includes specialists in different fields such as an architect, designer, fashion designer and scientist. We then contemplated upon the directivity of art and society in general, and produced News From Nowhere which captures the coming future. We worked on a collaborative project and a 2-channel video that reflects our vision. Through this project, artists shared the current situation of people in contemporary age, and explored the coming society and function of art.
First, the video El Fin Del Mundo portrays a future in which the human kind is at a brink of extinction due to climate changes in earth. Consisting of two screens, the video on one screen presents the human kind’s last form and attitude of art by looking at the works of an artist at the last moment of human race. On the other screen is a video that questions the new meaning of art through the aesthetic consciousness and self-awareness of the new human kind, born after the eradication of all present values. Through the artistic consciousness and attitude shared by a man and a woman who appear in two screens of different space-time, this video presents the contact point between the last state of art and the new birth of art.
The second part consists of an installation work titled Voice of Metanoia, which we produced in collaboration with specialists of various spheres. With architects and designers who share the same critical mind with artists, we designed and created the basic daily necessity and dwelling environment for the survivors of the massive climate change on earth. Through this physical manifestation of the artists’ ideas, the intention was to discuss and demonstrate the beauty and function of art by contemplating the aesthetic conventions and values of art in the future. For the actual work on food, clothing and shelter in the future, we created the future urban society with the Dutch architecture firm MVRDV and The Why Factory, and designed the artificial moisture-supply organ set with the Japanese design engineering group TAKRAM. The Korean designer Jung Kuho designed clothes of the future, while the Japanese fashion designer Tsumura Kosuke designed the future uniforms. With the architect Toyo Ito, we proposed for the work, the new apartment blocks and city environment after the natural disaster in Tohoku area in Japan. Lastly, we (MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho) created the lighting of the future called Mind Light with the optometrist Chung Sang-moon and brain scientist Jeong Jaeseung.
Lastly, we published the book News From Nowhere, which captures the process of the work as well as debates and interviews with scholars of different fields. Published in time for the opening of Kassel dOCUMENTA(13), this book documents conferences and discussions held with great scholars in education, politics, science, culture, and religion, and functions as a physical site and platform which reflects the present and proposes the future. The book records in detail how a scholar from each different field sees the visions of the future and values of the present from his or her unique standing. In the form of letters, the book features the famous Korean poet Ko Un’s ideas on the beauty and spirit of the age, the Japanese avant-garde musician Toshi Ichiyanagi’s definition of avant-garde spirit, and the Singaporean film director Eric KHOO’s ideas on the horrors of the age. In addition, the Korean zoologist Professor CHOE Jae Chun presents his outlook on art and its evolution as a zoologist, the Korean Buddhist monk Misan writes about religion in the future, and Professor Chris Dobrian from USA shares his visions about education in the future. Furthermore, we worked on the ideas of resistance against oblivion with the renowned curator Hans-Ulrich Obrist, new community design with Yusaku Imamura and Kayoko Iemura in Japan, cognition and capital with the Korean humanities scholar CHO Junghwan, and lastly, art and spirit of resistance with the Korean film director LEE Changdong.
NFN - What message would you like to deliver to people in the arts and others through this project?
MOON & JEON - We wish to stress on how a work resulted, although insufficient, through sharing our ideas and discussing problems with others. We never intend to deliver the conclusion and the message that this is what art is, or that this is the problem/solution/answer today through this project. This project is a process of an answer for everyone.
NFN - What was the most difficult aspect in the preparation and production process of the work?
MOON & JEON - Seeking individual people who share our ideas and persuading them to partake in the project was the most challenging, yet the most gratifying aspect. It was a priceless time of learning a great deal, of being inspired, and becoming humble.
Making the film was also challenging.
We became exhausted from pre-production, filming, and the post production of editing, adding in computer graphics, and mixing. Publishing the book was also draining. In hindsight, nothing was easy.
NFN - What opportunities do you think are waiting for you after having participated in this year’s documenta?
MOON & JEON - Actually, it’s less about the fact that we participated in Kassel Documenta and more the idea of having made this work and introduced it to others that makes us look forward to the next step in our art practice. We’re thinking of how we can develop parts of our work in the exhibition and the publication that were lacking or insubstantial in our next work.
NFN - What was the response of your work in Kassel?
MOON & JEON - A number of media are interested in it. We have prepared for the opening and have met people from a few press and media. They like the work, and are in agreement and support of our work.
NFN - What’s next on your agenda?
MOON & JEON - We’re participating in the Korean Artist Prize Exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, at the end of August, and are also participating in Gwangju Biennale in September.

카셀 도큐멘타 13에 문경원과 전준호가 참여한다. 1955년을 처음으로 5년 마다 열리는 카셀 도큐멘타가 올해로 13회를 맞았다. 독일 카셀에서 6월 9일부터 9월 16일 까지 100일 동안 열리는 이번 카셀 도큐멘타에서 문경원과 전준호는 그들의 공동 작업인 ‘뉴스 프롬 노웨어(News From Nowhere)’ 프로젝트의 첫 선을 보인다.
9월 6일(독일 현지 시각) 본 뉴스 프럼 노웨어에서는 독일 카셀 현지에 있는 문경원과 전준호와 인터뷰한 내용을 아래에 싣는다.
NFN - 세계 최대 미술행사인 카셀 도큐멘타에, 무척 오랜만에 한국작가가 참여하게 됐다. 소감은 어떤가?
문, 전 - 우리로서는 의미 있는 일이다. 도큐멘타 13에 초대되었을 때 우리가 계획하고 준비하고 있었던 뉴스 프럼 노웨어 프로젝트를 가장 적당한 곳에 소개 할 수 있겠다 생각했다. 그런 기쁨이 컸었다.
NFN - 어떤 계기로 카셀도큐멘타에 참여하게 됐는지 궁금하다.
문, 전 - 이번 도큐멘타 예술 감독인 케롤린이 2010년 한국을 방문했었다. 그 전 전시관계로 알고 있던 사이였었는데 최근 작업이 궁금하다고 해서 우리의 뉴스 프럼 노웨어 프로젝트에 대해서 설명을 했었다. 그때 케롤린이 프로젝트에 호감을 가졌었고 얼마 후 도큐멘타에서 함께 전시를 하자는 제의가 왔었다.
NFN - 동시대와 현대 예술의 중대한 지향점을 제시하는 카셀도큐멘타인데, 어떤 작품을 선보이는가? 작품 내용과 제작과정 등을 좀 구체적으로 설명해 달라.
문, 전 - 이번 프로젝트는 영상과 설치 그리고 웹사이트 운영, 책의 출판으로 이루어진다.
프로젝트 ‘NEWS FROM NOWHERE’는 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할을 조명하는 것으로 출발한다. 우리는 ‘과연 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할은 무엇인가’ ‘우리의 발언이 이 시대 속에서 역류하고 있지는 않나’라는 질문을 던지던 중 ‘다른 시각 예술가는 이런 우리의 고민에 어떤 생각을 가지고 있을까’하는 의문에 맞닥뜨리게 되었다. 결국 건축가, 디자이너, 패션디자이너 그리고 과학자 등 각 분야의 전문가들과 함께 서로의 생각을 나누는 협업 프로젝트를 기획하게 되었고, 이들과 함께 모여 현 예술의 지향점과 사회 전반을 성찰하고 다가올 미래의 모습을 그리는 프로젝트 ‘News from Nowhere’를 만들었다. 우리는 우리들의 시각이 녹아든 2개 채널의 비디오 및 협업 프로젝트를 진행했다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 작가들은 동시대인들이 처한 상황과 조건을 이야기하고 다가올 사회와 예술의 가능성을 탐색하고자 한다.
첫번째, 영상작업 ‘EL FIN DEL MUNDO (세상의 저 편)’는 지구의 환경변화로 인류의 생존이 위협받는 미래를 배경으로 하고있다. 두개의 화면으로 구성된 이 영상작업은 인류 위기의 마지막 순간, 죽음을 앞에 둔 예술가의 작업을 통해 마지막 예술의 형태와 태도는 무엇인가 그리고 지금의 모든 가치들이 사라지고 난 후 새로 태어난 신인류가 깨닫는 미의식과 예술의 자각을 과정으로 보는 예술의 의미는 무엇인가를 묻는 작업이다. 두 화면의 시공간이 다른 상황에서 등장하는 남녀가 공유하는 미의식과 예술 태도를 통해 마지막 예술의 모습과 새로운 탄생을 알리는 예술의 접점을 이 영상은 보여준다.
두 번째 작업인 설치 작업 ‘Voice of Metanoia (공동의 진술)’는 우리들이 각계 전문가들과 함께 협업하여 만들어낸 작업이다. 작가들과 문제의식을 공유한 건축가와 디자이너들과 함께 지구 환경의 대변화 이후 생존자들에게 필요한 기본적인 생필품과 주거환경을 만들고 디자인했다. 이 설치 작업을 통해 작가들은 그들의 논의가 단지 말로 그치지 않고 실제적인 작품제작 과정을 거치면서 점차 알아가게 되는 미래의 미적 관념과 가치를 통해 현재의 아름다움에 대한 것 그리고 예술의 역할에 대해 의논하고 전시하고자 하는 의도한다. 미래의 의식주에 대한 실질적인 작업을 위해서는 네덜란드의 건축그룹인 MVRDV와 The Why Factory와는 미래의 도시사회를, 일본의 디자인 엔지니어링 그룹인 TAKRAM 과는 수분 공급 인공 장기 세트를, 한국의 디자이너 정구호는 미래의 옷, 일본의 패션 디자이너 츠무라 코스케는 미래의 유니폼을, 건축가 토요 이토와는 일본의 도호쿠 지역의 재난 이후 공동 주택과 새로운 도시 환경을 제안하고, 마지막으로 안과 의사 정상문과 뇌 과학자 정재승과 문경원, 전준호 작가가 함께 만든 마인드 라이트라는 미래의 조명을 만들었다.
마지막으로는 이 모든 과정과 각 분야 석학들과의 토론과 인터뷰가 담긴 책 가 출판되었다. 카셀도쿠멘타(13) 오픈에 맞춰 발간된 이 단행본은 교육, 정치, 과학, 문화, 그리고 종교계 석학들과의 컨퍼런스와 토론을 통해 현재를 돌아보고 미래를 제시하는 실천의 장이자 플랫폼 역할을 한다. 작가들이 각 분야의 석학들을 찾아 각자 자신의 자리에서 바라본 미래
의 비전과 현재의 가치를 묻고 대담한 내용들이 고스란히 담겨있는 책이다. 이 ‘News from Nowhere’ 책을 위해 한국의 민족시인 고은 선생은 아름다움과 시대정신에 대해서, 일본의 전위 음악가인 토시이 이치야나기는 아방가르드 정신이란 무엇인가를, 싱가폴의 영화 감독인 에릭 쿠와는 시대의 공포에 대해, 한국의 동물학자 최재천 교수와는 진화하는 예술의 모습 그리고 동물학자가 본 예술이란 것에 대해, 한국의 승려 미산 스님과는 미래의 종교에 대해, 미국의 크리스 도브라이언 교수와는 미래의 교육에 대해 편지 형식의 글로 다루었으며, 유명 큐레이터인 한스 울리히 오브리스트와는 망각에 대한 저항을, 일본의 유사쿠 이마무라와 카요코 이에무라와는 새로운 커뮤니티 디자인이란 주제로, 한국의 인문학자인 조정환 선생님과는 인지자본이란 내용을 그리고 마지막으로 예술과 저항 정신에 대해 한국의 영화감독인 이창동 감독과 함께 했다.
NFN - 이번 출품 된 프로젝트를 통해 미술인 혹은 세계인에게 어떤 메시지를 전하고자 하는가?
문, 전 - 이 프로젝트를 진행하면서 많은 사람들과 생각을 공유하고 문제의식을 함께 토론하며 미흡하나마 나름의 결과물들을 선보일 수 있는 것에 대해 의미를 두고 싶다. 예술은 이것이다. 혹은 이런 것이 오늘의 문제점이고 해결책과 정답은 이것이다. 라는 결론과 메세지를 이 프로젝트를 통해 전달하려고 하는 것은 결코 아니다. 이 프로젝트는 하나의 과정이고 질문들이며 모두가 함께하는 장이자 여정이다.
NFN - 준비 및 제작과정에서 가장 힘들었던 점은 무엇인가?
문, 전 - 우선 우리의 생각과 함께하는 분들을 한 분 한 분 찾아다니며 만나고 프로젝트에 참여를 설득하는 일이 가장 힘들었지만 동시에 가장 즐거운 일이였다. 정말 많이 배우고 새삼 감격하며 스스로 겸손해지는 값진 시간들이였다.
영화 작업도 힘들었었다.
사전 준비기간과 촬영 기간 등의 제작 기간과 이 후 편집과 CG ,믹싱 등 많은 과정을 거치는 동안 많이 지치고 힘들었었다. 마지막 출판 작업도 그렇고 돌이켜보니 힘이 안든 일이 없었던 것 같다.
NFN - 이번 카셀 참여를 통해 작가로서 어떤 계기와 기회가 생길 것이라 기대하는가?
문, 전 - 사실 카셀 도큐멘타에 참여했다는 것보다는 일보다 이 프로젝트를 만들고 사람들에게 소개 한다는 것이 우리에겐 훨씬 다음 과정을 기대하게한다. 이번 프로젝트를 전시로 소개하고 출판하는 과정에서 부족하고 미흡했던 부분에 대해 다음엔 좀 더 잘 할 수 있는 부분들을 생각하고 있다.
NFN - 카셀 현지 반응은 어떤가?
문, 전 - 여러 매체에서 관심을 가지고 있다. 이제 오픈 준비하고 몇 몇 프레스와 매체들의 관계자들을 만났다. 많이 좋아해주고 우리 생각에 동조하며 격려 해주고 있다.
NFN - 이후 활동계획은?
문, 전 - 우선 8월 말에 국립현대 미술관에서 열리는 ‘올해의 작가’ 전시가 있고, 9월에 열리는 광주 비엔날레에 참여한다.
