20XX, the northern hemisphere
In the late 21st century, the surface of the earth is submerged under water because of rising sea levels. Radioactivity permeates every corner of the Earth and hazardous substances have been released worldwide. Those humans who are still living now depend on a corporate giant called Tempers, a floating city, and the only hope the world has to survive.
In some human settlements, which exist on manmade platforms above the water, people have started investigating the world’s contaminated eco-system and keeping a record of it. Tempers has sent people who are seeking citizenship with the corporate giant to these archives so they can collect samples from the surrounding environment. That is how the story’s two main characters, a man and a woman, arrived at their own archive.
In the past, both the man and the woman were artists.
They were also once lovers, but ended up fighting over their conflicting ideas about art. The woman eventually left the man in an effort to make it as an artist.
After the apocalypse, however, there was no more art, as every human now had one single purpose: to survive. The man and woman have been sent to an archive that was built on the site of a former museum, the Tate Modern in London, once a major home to the world’s arts. Yet now there is none of the once astronomically priced artwork remaining. What was once a beacon of light in the artistic community has been reduced to a contaminated area where human life is threatened.
In this isolated place, the man and woman carry out their tedious, repetitive mission for no other reason than to become citizens of Tempers. While there, they fight over their differing view of values. At the same time, they feel a sense of nostalgia when remembering an era long since past, a time when they were happy together.
The man and woman are seen on two divided sections of the screen. Their dialogue subtly contradicts and overlaps one another. As the viewer soon learns, they weren’t actually there together; they passed through at different times.
After all this loneliness, Tempers picks up the man and woman from the archive on separate occasions.
Only on their final day do the man and woman realize their true mission.
The task they were sent to conduct had no real meaning. All Tempers wanted was a sample human bodies that had been exposed to contamination.
When Tempers arrives at the archive, it opens one of its gates.
At the threshold of the world’s most important place, the man and woman make different choices once again…

2050, 북반구
21세기 후반, 해수면 상승으로 대지는 물에 잠기고 지구는 방사능과 온갖 유해 물질에 오염됐다. 살아남은 인류는 거대 기업 템퍼스에 생존을 의존하고 있다. 템퍼스는 바다 위를 부유하는 도시 국가로, 이 시대의 중심이자 세계 그 자체다.
수면 위로 드러난 일부 지역에는 오염된 생태 조사를 위해 아카이브가 설치되었다. 템퍼스는 시티즌 자격을 얻으려는 사람들을 아카이브로 파견해 샘플 채집을 시켜왔으며 남자와 여자도 그렇게 이곳 아카이브에 오게 되었다.
과거에 남자와 여자는 미술 작가였다. 이들은 한때 연인이었으나, 상반된 예술론과 가치관을 두고 반목하였고 여자는 작가로서 성공할 기회를 잡기 위해 남자를 떠났다.
하지만 대재앙 이후 생존 문제가 모든 것에 우선되면서 예술의 역사는 중단되었고 두 사람 모두 작가로서 아무런 존재 가치도 없어졌다. 공교롭게도 이들이 파견된 아카이브는 세계 미술의 중심이었던 런던 테이트 모던 뮤지엄 터. 천문학적 가격이 매겨졌던 예술 작품은 이제 아무 가치도 없다. 미술계 권위의 상징이었던 이곳은 이제 생명이 위협받는 오염 지대일 뿐이다.
완전히 고립된 곳에서, 남녀는 오로지 시티즌 자격을 얻기 위해 단조롭게 반복되는 임무를 충실히 이행한다. 둘은 여전히 다른 가치관 때문에 부딪치고 서로를 공격하지만 아득하게 사라진 과거의 한때, 행복했던 둘만의 시간을 떠올리며 추억에 빠지기도 한다.
남자와 여자는 두 개의 분리된 스크린으로 보여진다. 이들의 대화는 미묘하게 어긋나고 겹치면서 사실 두 사람이 함께 있는 것이 아니라 다른 시간대에 같은 장소를 거쳐 갔음이 밝혀진다.
기나긴 고독의 시간이 지나고 드디어 템퍼스가 이들을 태우러 다가온다. 그러나 아카이브에서의 마지막 날이 되어서야 이들은 임무의 진짜 목적을 알게 된다. 자신들이 여태 수행한 작업은 아무 필요도 의미도 없었으며 오염에 노출된 인체, 즉 자신이 템퍼스가 의도한 유의미한 샘플이었다는 것을.
템퍼스로 가는 문이 열린 아카이브 세상의 끝이자 중심인 그곳에서 다시 한 번 남자와 여자는 서로 다른 선택을 하게 되는데….
