MOON Kyungwon & JEON Joonho will be participating in the 2012 Korea Artist Prize Exhibition, co-organized by the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, and the SBS Foundation, presenting a collaboration project titled, Voice of Metanoia – Two Perspectives. The exhibition, which will be held from August 31st to November 11th, 2012,
consists of four individual projects with distinct themes of the four recipients of the prize.
Voice of Metanoia – Two Perspectives is a follow up to the NEWS FROM NOWHERE project in that it proposes the notion that art is designed to transform the human consciousness.
The comprehensive exhibition, which includes installations, drawing, and video works, demonstrates the artistic form of our time. Through installation works and color systems that re,ect posters of renowned biennials and triennials, MOON & JEON propose a certain ground which art should maintain in this day and age, in which conceptual terminology, as opposed to visual language, runs rampant. Nonetheless, rather than trying to de)ne the nature and role of art, MOON & JEON calmly present the historical fact that art has always functioned to expand the horizon of human consciousness.
MOON & JEON present a video work that tracks down an investigator, William Guest, sent to the present from the future with the mission to grasp the function and essence of art. Like a detective in search
of clues to a case, Guest visits museums and discovers the inherent human pursuit for beauty in an environment seemingly devoid of it. By retracing his course of travel, we end up discovering art that has been defined by our times, which we find both convincing and perplexing.
The condition of art which Guest arrives at is precisely a portrait of our reality. In this regard, the way of looking at art as proposed by MOON & JEON’s work will hopefully yield an opportunity for the audience to
reconsider the nature, passion, and signi)cance of art, which has always been pursued by humanity.

‘올 해의 작가상 2012’

국립현대미술관과 SBS문화재단이 공동으로 기획한 《올해의 작가상 2012》전시에 〈공동의 진술- 두 개의 시선〉이란 제목으로 참여한다. 이 번 전시는 2012. 8. 31 ~ 11. 11 까지 과천 국립 현대 미술관에서 선정된 4팀의 개별 작가들이 펼치는 4개의 프로젝트로 구성된다.
〈공동의 진술 - 두 개의 시선〉에서 문경원·전준호는 이전 프로젝트 〈NEWS FROM NOWHERE〉를 통해 터득한 “예술은 인간 인식의 변화를 위한 기획”이라는 생각을 작품을 통해 제시한다.
전시장에 놓인 설치, 드로잉, 영상을 아우르는 통합 작업은 우리시대 예술의 형태를 드러내는 것이라 할 수 있는데 시각언어보다는 개념 언어가 난무하는 우리시대에 예술이 유지해야할 범주를 지난 세계 각지에서 개최된 비엔날레, 트리엔날레 등 미술행사 포스터에서 기인한 색상과 설치작업을 통해 제시한다. 하지만 이러한 작업을 통해 문경원·전준호는 예술의 본질과 역할을 규정하기 보다는 예술이 인간 인식의 지평을 변화시키는 역할을 담당하였다는 역사적 사실만을 담담히 제공한다.
영상 작업을 통해서는 예술의 본질을 파악하기 위해 미래에서 현재로 파견된 수사관의 행적을 담아낸다. 사건의 실마리를 쫓아가는 형사와도 같은 태도로 예술의 본질과 역할을 추적하는 그는 미술관을 방문하는가 하면, ‘미’라는 것이 존재할 것 같지 않은 환경 속에서 본능적으로 아름다움을 추구하고 있는 인간 욕구를 발견하기도 한다. 이러한 그의 행적을 쫓아 우리의 시선이 머무는 곳에서 발견하게 되는 우리 시대가 규정한 미와 예술은 때론 우리를 수긍하게도 혹은 우리들의 고개를 갸웃거리게 만들기도 한다.
윌리엄 게스트의 시선과 발끝이 머무는 곳에서 만나는 미술의 현장은 있는 그대로 우리의 현실이자 자화상이다. 이런 점에서 문경원·전준호의 작품이 제공하는 예술에 대한 인식이 우리로 하여금 인류가 끝없이 추구해 온 예술에 대한 열정, 그리고 그 본질과 의미를 재고하는 기회를 제시해 줄 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
