Gustave Courbet’s Bonjour Monsieur Courbet (1854) lashes out against the huge disconnect between art and reality of a divided society. Through his piece, we gained insights into both Courbet and the bygone era. Time has passed and people from the era are no longer with us, but Courbet’s mien and mind remain alive. This is what we wanted to show. So, we took out the characters from the original painting, but kept the background and reproduced it as a carpet. Under the title of Welcome Mr. Courbet, we are hosting shows, lectures, and performances on our ‘carpet’ inspired by the Bonjour Monsieur Courbet painting.
Involved in the events are people who share Courbet’s spirit of resistance. By doing so, we reinterpret Courbet’s thoughts to fit our current conditions.
Mime artist YOO Jinkyu was invited as the )rst guest of the Welcome Mr. Courbet project. YOO is famous for pioneering the art of pantomime in Korea. He expressed his opposition to military rule and dictatorship through art. He has also rebelled against the practice of copying existing works and has always challenged himself to explore new styles.

어서오세요! 꾸르베씨 Vol. 1

쿠스타브 꾸르베의 〈안녕하세요? 꾸르베씨〉 그림은 당시 계급 사회에서 비롯된 갈등과 그 현실을 직시하지 못하는 예술의 오류들을 신랄하게 비판한 작품이다. 우리는 이 작품을 통해서 꾸르베의 태도와 시대정신을 볼 수 있었다. 비록 시간이 흘러 당시의 인물들은 사라졌지만 꾸르베가 가졌던 태도와 정신은 여전히 지금 우리 곁에 유효 하다는 것을 보여주고 싶었다. 그래서 원작의 그림에서 인물들을 지워내고 그 배경만 남겨 카페트로 제작했고, 꾸르베씨 그림을 재해석해서 만든 카패트에서 우리는 지금 현재 꾸르베와 같은 저항 정신과 태도로 실천적 삶을 살고 있는 이 시대의 꾸르베들을 모셔 〈어서오세요! 꾸르베씨〉란 타이틀로 공연과 강연 그리고 퍼포먼스를 진행하고 있다. 이것은 꾸르베의 정신을 하나의 그림에서 벗어나 우리를 둘러싼 환경과 장으로서 재해석한 것이다.
그 첫 번째 초청자로 한국의 마이미스트인 유진규 선생님을 모셔 그분의 공연을 선보였다. 유진규 선생님은 척박했던 한국 공연계에 마임이라는 쟝르를 꽃 피우고, 군사 정권과 독재 정권으로 얼룩진 한국 근 현대사를 온 몸으로 헤치고 살아온 분 이다. 더불어 문제의식 없이 답습만 되풀이되는 한국의 공연 풍토에 저항하며, 늘 끝임 없이 새로운 실험을 모색하고 해오고 있다. 그래서 우리가 〈어서오세요! 꾸르베씨〉 프로젝트의 첫 번째 꾸르베로 그분을 초청한 것이다.
