Toyo Ito wins 2013 Pritzker Prize

Architect Toyo Ito(71·photo), who MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho collaborated with under the theme ‘Mind Shelter,’ received the 2013 Pritzker Prize, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture. On the 17th, The Hyatt Foundation, which sponsors the prize, announced Toyo Ito, who designed the “Home-for-All” communal space for survivors of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011, as the laureate of the prize, placing high value on his demonstration of the responsibility of architecture on society.
As a master of contemporary Japanese architecture, Toyo Ito designed a number of unique buildings including Sendai Mediatheque in Sendai City, Miyagi, Za-Koenji Public Theater in Tokyo and TOD’S Omotesando building in Tokyo, masterpieces that sophisticatedly show depth of surface and unique structural aesthetics through contemporary architectural materials of steel and glass; Tama Art University Library in Tokyo, a construction with characteristic arches; and the Tower of Winds in Yokohama, a technological sculpture that translates sound and wind into colors during nighttime.
Moreover, Toyo Ito contemplated over the role architecture must take in the recovery efforts for the Great East Japan Earthquake. He decided to build the “Home-for-All,” a communal space for survivors in the city of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. Last year, Toyo Ito’s Japanese pavilion won the Golden Lion award for best national pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the world’s largest architecture festival, by exhibiting an idea to easily build homes, utilizing natural materials from the devastated region including trees and rocks.

토요이토 플리츠커상 수상
마인드 쉘터를 주제로 우리와 협업하였던 건축가 이토 도요(71·사진)선생님이 ‘건축계의 노벨상’으로 불리는 울해 프리츠커상을 수상했다. 프리츠커상을 운영하는 하얏트 재단은 17일 동일본 대지진 피해자 쉼터를 설계한 이토 도요에게 상을 주기로 했다고 밝히고, 사회에 대한 건축의 책임감을 보여준 점을 높게 평가했다고 설명했다.
현대 일본 건축을 대표하는 거장으로 현대 건축 소재인 철과 유리로 깊이감있는 표면과 개성적인 구조미를 세련되게 보여준 걸작인 센다이 미디어 테크, 도쿄 자코엔지 극장, 도쿄 토즈 매장, 아치가 도드라지는 다마대학 도서관, 밤이 되면 조명으로 다양한 느낌을 연출하는 요코하마 ‘바람의 탑’ 등 많은 개성적인 작품들을 선보였다.
이토 도요는 동일본 대지진 이후 지진 피해 복구에 건축이 어떤 역할을 할 것인가에도 많은 관심을 쏟아왔다. 이와테현에 지진 피해자 쉼터인 ‘모두의 집’을 설계했고, 지난해에는 세계 최대의 건축 축제인 베네치아 비엔날레에서 일본관 커미셔너를 맡아 재해 현장에서 나무와 돌 등의 자연재료로 쉽게 집을 지을 수 있는 아이디어를 전시해 국가관 최고상을 받았다.
