Toyo Ito: Architecture After 3.11 at SAIC
The Butler-VanderLinden Lecture on Architecture

2013.10.15. 6:00 pm
The Art Institute of Chicago, Rubloff Auditorium, 230 S. Columbus Dr.

On October 15, a special lecture entitled “Architecture After 3.11” by 2013 Pritzker Laureate Toyo Ito was delivered at SAIC. The architect had also participated in SAIC’s Conversation on Beauty held earlier in the day. At the lecture, Ito presented his recent project since the tsunami that struck Japan in March of 2011. The highlight was his “Home-for-All,” where he had designed a series of communal spaces for the towns destroyed by the natural disaster. In explaining his way of connecting his general practice and post-tsunami projects, Ito stressed his vision for an “architecture that is open to nature and harmonizes with people.”

This lecture is jointly supported by Architecture Newspaper, SAIC's Visiting Artists Program; Department of Exhibitions and Exhibitions Studies; William H. Bronson and Grayce Slovet Mitchell Lectureship in Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects; the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts; the Butler-VanderLinden Lecture on Architecture endowment of the Architecture & Design Society at the Art Institute of Chicago; and AIA Chicago. The Architecture & Design Society gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support of Park Hyatt Chicago. Additional support is provided by the National Building Museum. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
