Louis Vuitton Korea unveiled its first edition of ARTisans as a part of the company’s social responsibility initiative program.
The program invites an inganmunhwajae (an artisan of Korean traditional culture; literally meaning human cultural asset, the status of which is designated by the Korean government to those with exceptional ability to perform or produce cultural assets) and contemporary artists to work on a collaborative project that offers a new interpretation of traditional culture. The invited artists for its first edition are Lee Yeongsu (85 years old; the recipient of 42nd inganmunhwajae for musical instrument craftsmanship), Lee Dongyun (58 years old; the recipient of 42nd inganmunhwajae for musical instrument craftsmanship--assistant), and artists Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho.
The project yielded into a fictional documentary Gongmudohaga, produced by Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho, which traces the history of sound with traditional instruments as the medium. The project was inspired by the eponymous Gongmudohaga, the oldest Korean classical poetry/narrative song that tells a story narrated by the wife of a deranged old man. Moon and Jeon’s fictional documentary will tell how “sound” and “music” came about and trace the origins of the first instrument invented in Korea.
Louis Vuitton Korea introduces ARTisans as a “new kind of social responsibility project that provides a platform for the conservation and creative envisioning of Korea’s traditional culture.” The creative encounter between traditional culture and contemporary art will be reflected onto the new collaborative project. The project will also consist of a workshop by the invited artists and craftsmen and a mentoring program for young artists.

루이비통 코리아는 새로운 사회공헌 프로젝트인 제 1회 아티잔스(ARTisans) 프로그램을 시작한다.한국의 전통문화를 계승하는 인간 문화재와 현대 미술가가 만나 전통 문화에 대해 새로운 해석과 비젼을 제시하는 이 프로젝트는 2대째 전통악기를 제작하고 있는 이영수(85·중요무형문화재 제42호 악기장 보유자)ㆍ이동윤(58·중요무형문화재 제42호 악기장 전수교육조교) 장인 부자와 문경원,전준호 작가를 선정하여 만남을 주선하고 새로운 협업작품을 지원한다.
문경원과 전준호는 전통 악기를 소재로 소리의 역사를 추적해가는 가상의 다큐멘터리 를 제작 한다. 백수광부의 아내 여옥이 불렀다는 ‘공무도하가’는 다양한 상상의 발원이다. 한국에서 가장 오래된 노래로 꼽히는 공무도하가는 ‘소리’와 ‘음악’이 어떻게 탄생했는지, 태초의 악기란 어떤 형태일지, 그리고 소리의 원형은 어떤 모습일지를 담은 페이크 다큐멘터리로 새롭게 해석된다.
루이비통코리아는 ‘아티잔스(ARTisans)’에 대해 “한국 전통문화 유산을 보존하고 계승하는 동시에 새로운 미래의 가치로 승화할 수 있는 장을 펼치기 위해 마련한 신개념 사회공헌 프로젝트”라고 설명했다. 현대예술작가와 장인의 만남은 전통문화와 현대예술의 교류를 통해 새로운 작품으로 반영될 예정이고 장인-예술가-신진작가(선정된 6인)를 잇는 워크숍과 멘토링을 통해 젊은 작가 지원도 이뤄진다.
