Since 2013, for the past three years, artist MOON Kyungwon has worked with YCAM in Yammaguchi, Japan for the Promise Park exhibition which opens November 28th.
Promise Park began as a two channel video projection at Yamaguchi Art Center in 2013 and highlighted the possibilities of what a park in the future would look like and mean to society. Then the artist worked with YCAM’s Interlab office to research ruins and modern parks in the Yamaguchi area, as well as the history and social background and roles of these sites. Following all the archived visual and recorded research, the artist premiered an installation made up on a woven carpet, sound and lighting at YCAM in 2014. Through Promise Park, MOON Kyungwon engages thought discussion about the significance and many factors surrounding modern-day parks and how they came to be spaces for the public (individual’s longing for utopia, the diversity of collective memory and experience holding a sense of universality contained in the form of a park intended for shared enjoyment). The artist examines how industrialization and modernization gave rise to a need for a space of shared enjoyment in wake of humanity’s departure of nature for city life thus producing the artificial nature that is a park. The artist uses this project as a platform to investigate what future parks could become and mean by compromising between the individual and collective longing for an ideal world, and reality. This project will continue through a ten-year period with planned workshops, events, and various activities currently in motion.
YCAM 문경원 개인전: Promise Park
지난 2013년 이후 3년간 문경원 작가가 야마구치현의 YCAM과 함께 진행해 온 프라미스파크의 전시가 11월 28일 오픈되었다.
프라미스파크 프로젝트는 2013년 야마구치 예술센터의 10주년 전시에서 2채널 비디오를 통해 미래의 폐허 위에 생겨나는 공원의 모습과 의미를 묻는 문경원 작가의 예술적 상상에서 시작되었고, 이후 YCAM InterLab멤버들과 실제 야마구치 지역의 폐허지역 및 근대공원의 역사적 사회적 배경과 의미에 대해 리서치를 진행하였다. 이후 2014년 이러한 리서치를 시각화한 쇼케이스 전시를 소개하고 이 내용들을 카메라에 담고 아카이브를 시각화하고 모든 내용들이 녹아든 프라미스파크(미래공원의 모습)를 실제 YCAM중정 공간에 카페트와 사운드 및 라이팅 설치로 제시하였다.
문경원 작가의 프라미스 파크는 근대 시민사회이후 공적인 장소로 태동한 ‘공원’의 의미와 상징을 통해 다양한 담론을 도출하는 프로젝트이다(각자가 꿈꾸는 유토피아, 다양한 개인의 기억과 경험이 역사 안에서 형성되어 온 공원 안에 어떤 보편성과 의미가 공유되고 향유될 수 있는지). 산업화되고 현대화될 수록 느끼는 결핍의 부분, 인공적 자연세계 안에서 향유하는 또 다른 공유의 기억들, 개인과 전체가 꿈꾸었던 이상세계와 현실의 간극 사이에서 작가가 제안히는 미래공원이 어떻게 새롭게 공원의 의미를 환기시킬 수 있는지 함께 생각해보는 플랫폼이다.
이 프로젝트는 십 년 간 진행될 예정이며 워크숍, 세미나, 다양한 협업으로 이어지고 있다.
