Filming has begun for a video piece, which will be a part of the commemorative exhibition entitled earth, fire and soul exhibition in Paris, put together by the Korean National Museum and the Grand Palais. The piece focuses on Korean white porcelain moon jars as a medium, using their aesthetics of imperfection to question the validity and philosophy of perfection, and the futility of the human pursuit of perfection. The video draws from and adapts Goethe’s Faust, particularly from the passages in which the titular character, dissatisfied with his life’s accomplishments, seeks further knowledge and perfection and sells his soul to the demon Mephistopheles for the power to achieve his goals. Although the subject of the video is primarily the white porcelain moon jar, it is not restricted by this subject matter and instead broadens the subject in a universal visual and philosophical manner.
The first stage of filming took place at the Arko Theater on February 29th, 2016. The actors featured in this shoot are Euna Choi, who was born blind, and theater actor Hak-sun Kim, both casted through an audition process. The second stage of film took place on March 2nd to March 5th in Japan by the Kumamoto Aso mountain, an active volcano, the nearby Taroko train station, and at the Arita Pottery village, where long ago Korean ceramicists had been forcefully relocated. The final stage of filming was done with the assistance of Samchuk-si’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism in filming at the Hwangseongul cave in Gangwondo province, considered a cultural asset. This project could not have been completed without actor Haksun Kim, director Chunmin Choi, lighting designer Sukmoon Yoo, and many staff, as well as the favorable weather and conditions that allowed us to film. During that period, we filmed mesmerizing nature spots never before caught on film such as the cave, which allowed us to capture the beauty, and the human desire for perfection needed in the filming of this project.

파리 그랑팔레에서 열리는 국립 중앙 박물관 한.불 수교 기념 전시에 출품 할 영상 작품의 촬영이 시작되었다. 이 작품은 전시 작 중 백자 달 항아리를 중심 소재로 완전함이 곧 충만함이 아니라는 우리의 미의식과 철학을 통해 인간이 추구하는 창조의 완전함에 대한 의문과 과정을 담아낸다. 이 영상은 괴테의 중 앎의 완성을 이루지 못하고 자신의 삶이 다함을 느낀 파우스트가 악마 메피스토에게 자신의 영혼을 바쳐 학문의 완성과 인생의 충만함을 되찾으려는 대목을 각색, 재구성하여 펼쳐진다. 비록 영상의 소재가 백자 달 항아리에 대한 것이지만 도예라는 한정된 테두리를 넘어, 보다 세계적인 시각과 철학적인 태도로 달 항아리의 의미를 새겨본다.
1차 촬영은 아르코 대극장에서 2016년 2월 29일에 진행되었다. 오디션을 통해 섭외된 맹인 최은아씨와 연극배우 김학선씨의 열연으로 극장에서의 촬영이 마무리 되었다.
2차 촬영은 3월 2일에서 5일 사이 우리 도공들이 끌려가 일본 도자예술의 꽃을 피운 아리타 도자마을, 구마모토 아소산의 활화산 및 인근, 토로코 열차등에서 진행되었다.
마지막 3차 촬영은 삼척시의 협조와 문화관광부의 도움으로 3월 14일 문화재인 강원도 환선굴의 동굴에서 진행되었다. 미지의 생명체로 등장하는 김학선배우와 최찬민 촬영감독, 유석문 조명감독 및 많은 스텝들의 열의 와 애정으로 열악한 날씨와 조건에도 무사히 촬영을 마쳤다. 그동안 한 번도 촬영으로 개방되지 않았던 천혜의 자연동굴에서 시원의 아름다움과 완성을 향한 인간의 열망에 대한 아름다운 장면들이 연출되었다.
