Every year, The Arko Art Center selects an artist, and introduces their work to the world through a series of 8 published texts that critically reviews their body of work. This year’s selection, was the artistic duo MOON Kyungwon & JEON Joonho.
The current published book includes text written by French critic and curator Jean-Max Colard whose writing is specifically focused on their installation and video work. The title and concept for this book is “In Situ” and delves into themes of time place and the theoretic and aesthetic implications of those themes.
On the event of the publication of the book, Arko Art Center hosted a public seminar and talk with Jean-Max and the artists on September 3rd. The seminar which was from 3PM to 5PM, included 50 participants that included art students, curators, editors and other people involved in the art world. Jean-Max leads the talk and gives everyone an overall understanding of the artwork of MOON Kyungwon and JEON Joonho and their place in the contemporary art scene, and leads an in depth discussion of their artwork.

“It seems to me that Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho’s work particularly escapes the implicit law of in situ, the absolute order of the present. In situ in the future: indeed, when one seeks to find ways of folding space and time, the present seems to give way to other temporalities, past or future, into which space is fictionally but also spatially moved. Leaving the immutable order of the present to imagine and offer other foldings of time, to teletransport the context in which the work appears into another temporality, here shows the unique and profound process of this artistic duo.”

아르코 비평 총서 출판 기념회

아르코 주최로 매년 한 작가를 선정해서 그들의 작업 세계를 소개하는 아르코 비평 총서 시리즈 8권이 출간되었다. 올해 선정된 작가는 문경원과 전준호다. 이번 총서는 프랑스에서 활동하는 비평가이자 큐레이터인 쟝 막스 콜라드가 그동안 문경원과 전준호가 만든 영상 설치 작품을 중심으로 글을 썼다. ‘현장에서 In Situ’ 라는 개념을 타이틀로 한 이 책은 문경원과 전준호의 작업 세계를 관통하고 있는 시간성과 장소성에 대한 철학적이고 미학적인 고찰을 담고 있다.
9월 3일 오후에는 아르코미술관 3층 세미나실에서 출판 기념을 겸한 공개 세미나로 쟝 막스와 작가들의 오픈 토크가 열렸다. 3시부터 5시까지 미술 전공자, 큐레이터, 기자 및 미술 관계자들이 50여 명 참석하여 쟝 막스 씨가 소개하고 있는 현재주의 및 문경원 전준호 작가의 작품에 대한 흥미로운 비평이 전개되었다. 작품에 대한 전반적인 이해 및 현대미술의 현장과 담론 속에서 작가들의 작품에 대한 심도있는 논의가 이루어졌다.

“문경원과 전준호의 작업은 개념에 내재하는 법칙인 절대적 현재라는 질서를 분명히 벗어나는 듯 보인다. 미래의 : 사실, 시간과 공간을 접는 방법을 찾고자 한다면 현재는 과거나 미래와 같은 다른 시간성에 자리를 내어주고 그 안에서 공간은 허구적인 한편 공간적으로도 이동하게 된다. 그들의 작업은 시간을 접는 다른 방식을 상상하고 제시하기 위해, 작업을 또 다른 시간성 안에 등장하도록 먼 곳으로 옮겨가기 위해 불변하는 현재의 질서를 벗어난다. 이 부분에서 두 작가의 독창적이고 심오한 작업 과정이 보여진다.”
