Meeting with Eric Khoo

Project Adviser Eric Khoo visited Seoul when he served as a judge for the 2011 Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival. He talked about some of his most recent activities and his interests. He also talked about moving to Singapore and the unbalanced society which exists there behind a facade of incredible economic growth at a meeting with Moon Kyungwon, Jeon Joonho, and Patrick Lee. Through stories about Singaporeans who are suppressed by strong political/social systems and surrounded by skyscrapers, they discussed conflict and contradiction in a multicultural, multi-religious, and multiracial society. While Eric Khoo usually made horror movies in the past, his newest animation film celebrates the life and work of Japanese comic artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi, and is scheduled to be released soon.

About TATSUMI by Eric Khoo
Tatsumi is an animation film that looks at the history of Japan after World War II through the life of Yoshihiro Tatsumi, a comic artist who created the genre of gekiga (dramatic pictures). In the movie, a woman prostitutes herself out to the American army after the war, and a father kills his son after the son kills his mother in the wake of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The film also features someone who becomes a social misfit after losing his arm at a factory, and a person who doodles on restroom walls in a totalitarian Japanese society.
Tatsumi is drawn from the perspective of adults and captures the hardships of life after World War II. His comics, so called gekiga, did not hide the travesties of the time and instead made people look at them head-on. Thus, his gekiga provided a venue for people to look at what was really happening in the world at the time.
A leading film director in Asia, Eric Khoo has made his mark known on the film world. Not one to shirk from looking at the darker side of life, such as through Be with Me, Khoo’s films belong to the same category as Tatsumi’s gekiga.
In Tatsumi, Eric Khoo displays his warm-hearted yet critical viewpoint on the world. While describing Japan as a defeated nation in the aftermath of the Second World War, the side effects of economic growth, and a society that has lost its sense of humanity while modernizing, Khoo makes a brilliant film by focusing on the young Tatsumi’s dreams and his growth.
Tatsumi is not all doom and gloom, though. In the movie, Tatsumi starts a career to help his impoverished family and works hard to pursue his dream with comics, drawing the world he sees at every step. Through his experiences, an isolated individual overcomes numerous obstacles.

어드바이저 에릭 쿠, 서울 방문

프로젝트 어드바이저 에릭 쿠가 2011 시네마디지털영화제 심사위원으로 서울을 방문했다. 문경원, 전준호, 패트릭 리와 함께한 자리에서 그는 최근 활동과 관심사, 그리고 싱가폴 이주사와 화려한 경제성장 이면의 불균형한 사회에 대한 이야기를 들려줬다. 마천루 빌딩 숲 사이 강력한 제도에 질식한 싱가폴 사람들의 대한 얘기를 통해 다문화 다종교 다민족 사회의 갈등과 모순 등에 대한 논의가 이어졌다. 잔인하거나 무서운 장면이 나오지 않는 호러 무비를 만들고 있는 에릭 쿠는 최근 일본 만화가 요시히로 타츠미(YOSHIHIRO TASUMI)를 그린 애니메이션 개봉을 앞두고 있다.

에릭 쿠의 영화 '타츠미' 소개
는 극화(Gekiga, 劇畵)라는 장르를 탄생시킨 일본 만화가 요시히로 타츠미의 삶을 통해 전후 일본 현대사를 바라보는 애니메이션이다. 그곳에는 전쟁이 끝난 후 미군에게 몸을 팔며 살아가는 여인의 삶도 있고, 히로시마 원폭 때 어머니를 죽인 아들을 죽여야 했던 남자의 사연도 있으며, 공장에서 팔을 잃고 사회 부적응자로 힘들게 살아가야 했던 사람, 전체주의 일본 사회에서 화장실에 낙서를 하며 지친 인생을 위로하려 했던 이야기도 존재한다.
타츠미는 음지가 만연했던 일본 사회에서 냉정한 삶의 원칙을 확인해야 하는 어른들의 시야를 담고 있다. 그의 만화, 이른 바 극화는 이러한 세상에 섣불리 환상을 부여하거나 어설픈 위로를 가장하려 하지 않았다. 오히려 그러한 현실을 똑바로 직시하도록 유도하고, 그 원인을 생각하도록 했다. 그런 측면에서 그의 극화는 세상을 관찰하고 진단하는 하나의 가치 체계가 될 수 있었다.
애니메이션 를 만든 에릭 쿠(Eric Khoo)는 아시아를 대표하는 감독으로 싱가포르 영화를 세계 영화계에 각인시킨 감독이다. 그는 같은 작품을 통해 삶과 세상의 어두운 그림자를 주목한 바 있는데, 그런 측면에서 그의 영화는 타츠미의 극화와 동류를 이룬다고 할 수 있다.
에릭 쿠는 이번 에서도 그가 가진 세상에 대한 따뜻한 시선과 날카로운 문제의식을 다시 한 번 보여준다. 전후 패전국으로서 일본, 경제성장 과정에서 불거진 부작용, 현대화되는 대신 인간미를 잃어가는 사회의 모습을 그리면서도, 그 안에 타츠미라는 한 청년의 꿈과 성장 과정을 살려내 한 가닥 온기를 간직하는 미학적 센스를 발휘했다.
그래서 애니메이션 는 마냥 차갑고 우울하지만은 않다. 어려운 가정 형편을 돕겠다는 갸륵한 정성에서 시작해서 자신이 바라보는 세상의 모습을 그리기 위해 중대한 결심을 하기까지, 영화 속 타츠미는 고집스럽게 만화의 길을 걷는다. 그리고 그 과정에서 겪게 되는 에피소드들은 신념을 가진 자의 아름다운 고립을 우리에게 확인시켜준다.
