Collaborations with MVRDV
I - CITY
In an effort to make some suggestions about issues regarding East Asian cities that have been undergoing rapid changes, the Dutch architect group MVRDV and The Why Factory have been conducting what they call the Vertical Village project in cooperation with the JUT Foundation for the past three years. I went to Taiwan to attend an exhibition involving this project. After leaving an airport that was under construction, the Taiwanese landscape I saw on my way to the Museum of Tomorrow, the exhibition venue, was not very different from the landscape in other developing countries across Asia.
The Vertical Village, a three-dimensional community, researches/analyzes rapid changes in East Asian cities, examines the characteristics of villages within cities, and provides a new perspective and alternative ideas about people’s lives in this environment. The huge buildings located on every corner of the city seem to be the best solution to exponential population
growth. Yet these gigantic buildings have wiped out smaller, more traditional houses. This exhibition displays hybrid architecture – a large-scale frame consisting of unique housing shapes – as an alternative. The six-meter-high grid-style structure installed at the exhibition venue clearly shows the flexibility of a planned block system, providing viewers with an opportunity to design their own house using parametric software.
급격한 변화를 겪어온(그리고 겪고 있는) 동아시아 도시 문제에 대한 제언을 위해 지난 3년간 네덜란드 건축가 그룹 MVRDV와 와이팩토리가 JUT 예술건축재단과 손을 잡고 진행한 ‘버티컬 빌리지’ 프로젝트 전시에 참석하기 위해 대만을 찾았다. 한창 공사 중인 공항을 빠져나와 전시가 열리는 ‘내일의 미술관(Museum of Tomorrow)’으로 가는 길에 바라본 대만의 풍경은 여느 아시아의 개발도상국과 별다를 게 없는 모습이다.
버티컬 빌리지는 동아시아의 급격한 도시 변화를 조사 및 분석하고, 도시 속 마을의 특성을 진단하는 한편, 이러한 환경 하에서 박탈되고 있는 개인의 삶에 대한 새로운 시각과 대안을 제시한다. 도시 중심 구역에 구석구석 퍼져 있는 거대한 빌딩들은 기하급수적인 인구 증가에 대한 최선의 해법으로 등장한 것이다. 거인과도 같은 이러한 건물들은 작은 규모의 전통 가옥들을 전멸시키는 효과를 일으키고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 수직의 매트릭스를 지탱하는 큰 뼈대 안에 개성 있는 주택들이 자리한 하이브리드 건축물
을 그 대안으로 제시한다. 전시장 내 6미터 높이로 제작된 가설 형태의 격자형 설치물은 계획적인 블록 구조의 융통성을 잘 보여주며 관람객들이 파라메트릭(parametric) 소프트웨어를 이용해 직접 자신의 집을 지어볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.
